About the role and our team

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Environmental Protection Officer to join our team in the Environmental Protection Unit.

Alongside the Environmental Protection Unit Manager, you will be responsible for a number of broad areas in relation to waste regulation, such as:

  • Field incident response for complaints principally of waste management activities which are alleged to be illegal and/or likely to cause an environmental hazard 
  • Enforcement in accordance with the Department’s policy which is designed to protect and enhance the Island’s environment within the core principles of environmental, economic and social sustainability
  • Inspection and regulation of licensed waste management sites
  • Prevention and minimisation of pollution from land including from existing contaminated sites such as historic mines and landfills
  • Regulation of export of hazardous waste off-Island in accordance with the BASEL convention
  • Policy, strategy and legislation development

The team’s current priorities include tackling illegal management of controlled waste, working with the Department of Infrastructure and other stakeholders to assist in the development a new Waste Policy & Strategy for the Island, and bringing Manx waste legislation more in alignment with the UK protocols.
